Kessler wins, captures WBC 168-pound title

Facing a must-win situation last night former WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler handed Carl Froch his first professional loss.

Kessler captured the WBC 168-pound title with a unanimous decision during second-round action of the Super Six tournament in Herning, Denmark.

The fight was scored 115-113, 116-112 and 117-111. Kessler improved to 43-2-0, while Froch slipped to 26-1-0.

No doubt, Aldo ranks among MMA elite

For those who question whether Jose Aldo is easily the top featherweight in mixed martial arts, take a look at his WEC 48 title defense last night in Sacramento, Calif. Then take a second look at the fight.Jose Aldo/Zuffa

That should erase any doubt as to just how dominant Aldo is at 145 pounds.

In a fight that many MMA followers believed would be closely contested, Aldo put on a clinic against former titleholder Urijah Faber. He would go on to earn a lopsided unanimous decision.

The fight was scored 49-45, 49-45 and 50-45. FightLedger.com had it 49-45 for Aldo. See ESPN.com for more WEC 48 post-fight report. Only the first round, when the fighters were feeling each other out, was relatively debatable as to who deserved 10 points.

Carl edges Cooper

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Three dominant first-round wins by Dan Hornbuckle, Ryan Thomas and Patricio Pitbull – as well as a hard-fought split-decision victory for U.S Army Sgt. Steve Carl – made for another exciting Bellator Fighting Championships event last night at Mohegan Sun Resort and Casino.

The action completed the quarterfinal rounds in Bellator Fighting Championships’ welterweight and featherweight tournaments. It also added to the already impressive resumes of all four winners.
