Arreola need not hang his head after loss

BY FRANKLIN McNEIL/Boxing column

Taking training seriously had never been a top priority for Cristobal Arreola. He always did just enough to knock off a few pounds and build his confidence before taking on the next opponent.Cristobal Arreola eats a left from WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko at Staples Center in Los Angeles./Pavel Terekhov

That approach served Arreola well during the first 27 fights of his pro career. During that span he walked through every opponent, sending 24 of them home early.

But for all the success he enjoyed, Arreola knew his lackadaisical approach to training would not serve him well against WBC heavyweight titleholder Vitali Klitschko. If Arreola had any chance of scoring an upset last night at Staples Center, being in tiptop physical condition was paramount.

Mayweather-Marquez nets 1 million buys

FIGHTLEDGER/Boxing report

NEW YORK -- HBO Sports reported today that one million pay-per-view buys were generated from the welterweight fight September 19 between Floyd Mayweather and Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The fight was promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions.Floyd Mayweather Jr./ Hogan Photos

The one-million buy total represents the highest performing boxing pay-per-view event in 2009 and generated $52 million in pay-per-view revenue. The million buys include 525,000 from cable homes and 475,000 from satellite homes.

It is only the fifth time in boxing pay-per-view history that a non-heavyweight event has attained the one-million buy mark. Mayweather, a bona fide superstar, returned to the ring after a 21-month absence and showed no signs of rust in scoring a dominating victory. He has now participated in two events that have reached the one million buy mark.
